The teacher's handbook
grAider user manual¶
grAider helps you turn student work and your marking guidance into draft scores and feedback. You decide what earns credit, check the suggestions, and approve the results. The AI supports your judgment; you remain responsible for the final assessment.
This guide follows the web app from your first sign-in to reviewing a completed assessment. Button names are shown in bold and use the English interface. You can also use the app in German or Spanish.

Your first assessment¶
- Sign in. If you have just registered, confirm your email first. See Account and access if you need help getting in.
- Add a class. Use Add class in the sidebar and give it a recognizable name, such as “Year 9 Biology.”
- Add an assessment. Select the class, choose Add assessment, and enter a title, such as “Cell biology — September.”
- Prepare your rubric. Open Manage rubric. Upload the task sheet, expected answers, and marking guidance, then use Extract rubric criteria to draft the criteria. You can also enter criteria yourself. Check the wording and points and wait for your changes to save.
- Upload student work. Return to the assessment and choose Upload student work. Choose the upload method that matches your files or photos. Follow Uploading student work to keep each student's pages together.
- Review the drafts. When a submission is Ready for Review, open it, compare the suggestions with the original pages, and adjust scores and feedback where needed. Use Approve draft when you are satisfied.
- Prepare feedback and look at the class results. Use Summarize feedback for a student-facing draft you can edit and copy. Open View stats on the assessment to explore the results across submissions.
Start with a small set of work so you can check that your criteria express the marking approach you intend before reviewing a whole class.
A few useful terms¶
| Term | What it means in grAider |
|---|---|
| Class | A place to keep assessments for a teaching group. |
| Group | An optional sidebar folder for organizing your classes. |
| Assessment | One exam, assignment, or other piece of assessed work, with its own rubric and student submissions. |
| Rubric | The criteria and point values used to assess the work. |
| Context documents | Task sheets, model answers, or other materials that explain how the work should be marked. |
| Submission | The work uploaded for one student. A whole-class scan is separated into individual submissions during processing. |
| Recognized text | The app's reading of the text in an uploaded document. Compare it with the original if a suggestion looks wrong. |
| Draft | A suggested result that still needs your review. |
When something needs attention¶
- You cannot upload: check that the assessment has rubric criteria, then read any message about file requirements, daily allowance, or temporary service availability. See upload help.
- A suggestion looks wrong: compare it with the original work and your criteria, then edit the score or feedback. See reviewing grades.
- An edit has not saved: keep the page open and follow the saving guidance in the relevant chapter. Rubric and feedback-summary edits have save-status messages; individual score and feedback edits currently have no visible save confirmation.
- You need to change the rubric after grading: read what happens after rubric changes before requesting another grading run.
- You need help with the app: choose Report a problem in the sidebar. Explain what you tried and what happened; the current page is included with your report.
